Bastille Day

 

Every year on July 14th France celebrates Bastille Day.

The Bastille was the main prison and military fortress in Paris in the 18thcentury.

On the 14th July 1789 angry citizens stormed the main prison, the Bastille and declared their independence from their traditional monarchy. At the time the king was Louis XVI.

The French Open

Good news for tennis fans as this week marks the beginning of the Tournoi de Roland-Garros – or the French Open as it is more commonly known. It has also been good news for the Scots – but more about that later!

The French Open is one of the four major world tennis championships (the other three being Wimbledon, the US open and the Australian Open)

The Cannes Film Festival

All eyes in the film world turned on the French city of Cannes last week as it celebrated its annual International Film Festival.  This was started just after the Second World War and has been held almost every year since. The highlight of the festival is the award of the prestigious ‘ Palme d’or’ ( Golden Palm ) prize  for the best film.
